Lego Rainbow Cake

8 February , 2014

Lego-Rainbow-cakeHere is where I shatter the illusion I am a master baker.  The cake itself for this comes from the wonderful Betty Crocker out of a box cake mix.  And the icing is out of her tubs.  But once you can get past that major cheat I did do the rest!

The instructions for the cake are linked above, but basically you need 2 cake mix boxes, I choose to ice and layer with chocolate buttercream instead of the traditional white for a rainbow cake.Lego rainbow cake mixture

You need to get the good gel food colouring to get the bright colours, my local ASDA sold all the colours I needed.  You divide the cake mixture into six and then colour each one and then cook them.  This does take some time, especially if you have a rubbish oven like mine where I could only cook one layer at a time.

Once all cooked and cooled you start building, I layered with chocolate and then covered in the same chocolate.

I made the lego bricks and mini figures using moulds I got on eBay.  I had make them up a few days before as it took a while to fill them, cool them and then redo to get enough.

The Smarties were a labour of love, I empties the packets out and divided the colours up.  I them placed them individually so no colours the same were touching (yes O.C.D. at its best)

The banner on the top was printed using Star Wars font  and then the cocktail sticks were pushed into the chocolate mini figures hands.

When I got to cut the cake, it was brilliant as I hadn’t see then inside obviously.  It tasted really good too, which is always a bonus.
